If there’s one thing about me, I’m always down for an adventure—especially when it involves sun, luxury, and a yacht. So when my longtime friends Ashley and Franck finally agreed to celebrate their 25th birthdays in Cancún, I knew it was about to be a trip for the books. And, of course, I vlogged the entire thing, so make sure you check out my YouTube channel for all the visuals!
Airport Antics: From Chaos to VIP Treatment
The Cancún airport? PACKED. I’m talking two-hour-wait kind of packed. But shoutout to accessibility privileges because we were with a friend in a wheelchair and got through in under 15 minutes. (Pro tip: Travel with your elders or anyone with mobility needs. It’s a game-changer.)
Baggage claim, though? A different story. It took FOREVER to get our checked bags, but honestly, after seeing the never-ending line of people, it all made sense.
Then there was the dog situation. Picture this: I’m standing there, minding my business, when a narcotics dog makes a beeline toward me. My Virgo paranoia kicked in IMMEDIATELY—even though I don’t partake in such things. Turns out, the pup was just vibing. An off-duty good boy. The way my soul left my body for a second, though?
First All-Inclusive Resort Stay: A Soft Life Experience
Our resort was giving luxury with a sprinkle of “we could use a little renovation.” The room? Big and spacious, with a partial ocean view and an Old Hollywood studio theme. Cute, right?
The only thing that had me side-eyeing was the shower water situation. You had to let it run for a few seconds because the first stream was giving mystery color. But once it settled, we were all good!
As for the food? Chefs kiss. Everything was included, and my favorite spot had to be OT Sports Bar. The vibes were chill, the food was American-style comfort, and the service was A1. Mexican cuisine in general? Flavorful! Not quite Houston-level or Haiti-level (iykyk), but still top-tier.
And let’s talk about the bars. They were everywhere. By the beach, in the restaurants, even IN the lazy river. Speaking of which…
Floating My Problems Away
This was my first time experiencing a lazy river, and let me tell you, I could’ve floated there all day. It took us a minute to get on (because, well, resort crowds), but once we were in? Pure relaxation. Mentally, I’m still there, floating with a drink in my hand.
Isla Mujeres & The Culture of Mexico
Mexico showed OUT when it came to culture. The people? Genuine, friendly, and full of life.
I loved how the Mayan culture is still very much alive and respected. One of our resort dinner shows even had an entire Mayan education segment, which I was here for! Also, I expected at least some level of anti-Black energy due to past tensions, but nope. Everyone I met was friendly and welcoming. We love to see it!
Another thing I noticed? The lack of toxic masculinity. I saw straight men dancing with each other while their wives hyped them up, and during Isla Mujeres’ Carnival, men were rocking skirts, dresses, and bras to celebrate the divine feminine. It was refreshing!
Turn Up in Downtown Cancún
Listen, Cancún nightlife is NOT for the weak. Our first club choice, 24K, was suspiciously empty (apparently there was some drama, but that’s another story). But Congo Cancún? Packed from wall to wall, cages for people to dance in, and five drinks included with entry. Yes, FIVE. Say less!
Trip Highlights: The Moments That Made It Unforgettable
- Celebrating Friendship: 10+ years of friendship, and we finally got to do a big birthday trip. Iconic.
- Lazy River Bliss: I might as well have changed my mailing address to “somewhere floating in Cancún.”
- Yacht Day to Isla Mujeres: If you know me, you know the water is my happy place. This time, we took a catamaran from Cancún to Isla Mujeres, and the ocean looked unreal. One side was a deep royal blue, and the other was a neon-clear turquoise. Nature SNAPPED.
- Networking: I met so many cool people from places I never even think about visiting (no shade) like Nebraska and Kansas. But my favorite encounters? A group of Black Queens from NCAT and two Haitian baddies from Massachusetts. It was giving community!
Overall, Cancún was everything I needed and more. And trust me, words don’t do it justice—you gotta watch the full trip on my YouTube channel! Don’t forget to like, comment, and subscribe for more adventures. Where should I go next? Drop your recommendations below!
